Theme
The theme acknowledges the fact that the most effective, enduring solutions come from communities themselves and from the people who live in those communities. Huge stores of untapped talent and expertise exist within communities.
The Business of Learning invites us to consider all aspects of learning provision within our sector: the business of good governance, the business of learning and teaching and the business of social enterprise. These will form the three strands for our conference workshops.
Keynote Speakers
Sanjit “Bunker” Roy
Sanjit "Bunker" Roy, has been a leading figure in the Indian NGO community for the past thirty years. He has nurtured a grass-roots social entrepreneurship that is redefining the way the world thinks about fighting poverty. His Barefoot College has trained more than 3 million people for jobs in the modern world using a unique bottom-up approach. The college's "barefoot professionals" then return home to use their new skills — as solar engineers, teachers, midwives, weavers, doctors and more. Bunker combines humanitarianism, entrepreneurship and education to help people steer their own path out of poverty, fostering dignity and self-determination along the way. In April 2010, Bunker was recognised by TIME as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Sir Ray Avery

Sir Ray Avery is a Pharmaceutical Scientist, who, over the past thirty years, has made a major contribution to the New Zealand pharmaceutical industry. He has also used his knowledge of pharmaceuticals, science, project management and product design to tackle big health issues endemic throughout the developing world at a very practical, sustainable level. As Technical Advisor to the Fred Hollows Foundation, he designed, and commissioned two state of the art Intraocular Lens Laboratories in Nepal and Eritrea and in 2003, he founded Medicine Mondiale enlisting the help of other scientists, and social entrepreneurs. His work has been recognised by his peers and he has received numerous awards including the Blake Leadership Medal. In 2010 he was named Kiwi Bank New Zealander of the year.
Dale Williams
Dale Williams is a trade certified motorcycle engineer, businessman and local body politician. He began his involvement in local politics in 1995 on the Otorohanga Community Board and District Council and was elected Mayor in 2004. Dale has initiated a unique apprentice support scheme and ten other youth initiatives in Otorohanga and since November 2006 the town has maintained zero registered unemployment for people under 25 and seen an 80 per cent reduction in resolved youth crime. Dale is passionate about working collaboratively with his community to create successful pathways for young people from school to work.
